Parkinson’s patients may hate feeding due to the difficulty in swallowing and the tremors that are commonly a source of embarrassment for them. However, to maintain the general well being of a Parkinson’s patient, care-givers should strive to ensure a healthy and balanced diet is part of their daily routine. Diet does not reduce Parkinson’s symptoms neither does it provide a cure but it can allow medications to work better.
Recommendations for PD Patients
- Increased fluid and fiber consumption
Fluid and fiber consumption eases digestive difficulties which cause constipation in patients. Increase water consumption to 8 glasses a day. Avoid caffeinated beverages, hot liquids and alcohol since they encourage dehydration and consequently low blood pressure. Foods rich in fiber include; fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grain breads and cereals will help too.
Some Parkinson’s patients experience painful muscle cramping. Adequate hydration may help deal with this problem.
- Increased intake of antioxidants
A diet with salmon, tuna and dark leafy vegetables will have anti inflammatory effects to the brain. PD patients often suffer from oxidative stress. A diet rich in antioxidants offsets oxidative stress and cellular damage thus promoting brain health.
Such include; artichokes, okra, kale, bell peppers, potatoes, fruits, berries, pears, apples, grapes, grains, eggs, legumes, nuts and dark chocolate
