A popular manufacturing company, invacare beds are long lasting, pass the FDA rules and are safe to use. This manual bed would be ideal for a rehabilitative patient who has gone through an orthopedic surgery and after coming back home, is asked to do simple exercises by their physiotherapist so that they can recover fully. I would not recommend any manual bed to patients who are immobile or to muscular dystrophy kids.
Why? It would call for the caregiver to constantly be around the patient so that they can adjust the bed. And if there is one thing that I have noted about invalids in my long career as a physiotherapist, it is that they hate feeling that they are a bother to you. It would therefore not be strange to find a patient falling from the bed as they struggle to adjust the cranks yet you were just a call away.
With a patient who is on the path to recuperation though, it is a best fit.

Frequently asked questions on the Invacare manual bed
What is the maximum and minimum heights it can reach?
The invacare manual bed can reach a maximum height of 23″ and lower to a minimum height of 15″.
I have a heavy patient, can the bed support their weight?
Yes, the invacare manual bed can support a weight upto 450lbs.
How do I ensure safety of the bed?
It is always a safe practice to keep the casters locked at all times. You only need to unlock them when you are moving the bed and once you are done with it, kindly make sure that you lock them again. You do not want your patient being moved by just the slightest push, do you?
You can also keep a telephone or a bed alarm next to the patient bed so that they can always alert you incase of anything.
Use of full rails ensure that the bed is safe and secure. With full rails, you are assured that the patient will not fall off from the bed or even loiter around unsupervised.
Can I place it on wet floors?
Placing the bed on a wet floor is a big no-no even when the casters are locked.
A wet surface is not only dangerous for the patient but also for you. It could cause skidding and injury on either the patient or you the caregiver.
What is the best mattress or the Invacare manual bed?
There is a wide range of mattresses that you can choose from for your Invacare manual bed.
- The foam mattress
The foam mattress is waterproof, comfortable and offers theraupetic value to the patient.
It is also lighter as compared to other hospital bed mattresses and therefore easy to carry.
The cover on it is durable, anti-bacterial and anti-static to improve on the comfort of the bed.
- Innerspring mattress
The innerspring mattress is made with durable vinyl cover that is waterproof, acid resistant and anti-bacterial.
Innerspring mattresses are designed with high quality fiber padding to increase on the bed comfort for the patient.
How do I set up the Invacare manual bed?
- The invacare bed usually arrives in three boxes. Check to make sure that they are all there in your shipment. They should have: your head and foot spring sections, headboard and footboard, casters, center shaft and bed rails. If you ordered for a mattress, make sure that it is also in the shipment.
- Unpack all the shipments in the box.
- Place the head spring and foot spring section on their side at a 90 degrees against each other.
- Latch them together and straighten out the bed base so that they now lie flat on the ground.
- Connect the spring fabrics on both the head and foot spring sections together so that they are all linked.
- Connect the headboard and footboard to the casters
- Attach the headboard and the footboard to the spring assembly.
- Connect the center drive shaft.
- Attach the pull tube to the head section
- Secure the bed with rails
- Place the mattress on the bed and it is now ready for use.
I always have a problem reading manuals and implementing the instructions and maybe that is why I did not like the invacare installation guide. But hey, it seems am not alone. Reading through amazon reviews, I found out that there are a good deal of people who were unable to set up their invacare beds. They too could not get their heads around the steps.
Thankfully, after seeing the many complaints, invacare came to our rescue and did a video showing how to assemble the bed once it is shipped to you.
Can I replace Invacare broken parts with parts bought from other manufacturers?
Invacare bed parts should only be replaced with Invacare parts. This is because they have been tested for safety. If you replaced any of the broken parts with another brand, anything could happen since the sizes might not be compatible and you could have cases of your patient trapped between the bed parts. Again, this will interfere with your warranty agreement with the company.
My head section is always higher than the foot section, what could be the problem?
This could happen if you did not level the bed during installation. It could also be that you got two head sections or foot sections shipped to you. Try to disassemble the bed and level it first. If it does not level, then that could be a shipment problem where you got two head sections or foot sections shipped to you instead of one for each.
My head and foot section does not adjust even when I turn the crank
You did not install the shaft properly. Kindly disassemble and reassemble properly.
